In case you missed it, Cal held on to the axe for another year in a 34-28 win over Stanford at the Farm. A big thank you to Stanford Pride for hosting Cal Alumni Pride at their tailgate party. In this issue, you'll learn about our scholarship recipients who were recently honored at a luncheon, find out about the 32% fee hike at UC that caused students to take over Wheeler Hall in protest, and discover what the Senator who represents Berkeley thinks about it all.

The 2009 Scholarship Awards Reception

State Senator Loni Hancock on funding UC
Senator Hancock (D-Berkeley) recently sat down with CBS 5 Reporter Phill Matier. "I hope the Regents will join with the students and the administration and they should come [to Sacramento] and say you cannot cut us anymore," said Hancock.

The State has cut per-student funding for UC in half over the last two decads. In half. Meanwhile, funding for prisons has surpassed funding for higher education. It's time for Sacramento to reprioritize UC.

Gay Cal Alum New Leader of the California State Assembly
Johh Perez will be the first openly gay Speaker of the California State Assembly. Perez, who is from Los Angeles, will face serious challenges as Speaker, including the State's projected deficit of $21 billion.

In memory of Karla Lemon '77, accomplished conductor
Karla Lemon, a skilled and dedicated conductor with a particular devotion to contemporary music, died at her home in Berkeley. She was 55. Our condolences to her family and partner, Christine Brandes.
